The Coming Storm

With her eyes closed, she knelt calmly onto the pad spread beneath her. Instinctively she pulled the hair tie from her wrist and whipped her jet black hair into a tight bun, she couldn’t have it get in the way. She leaned forward slowly, placing her hands on the pad, first the left then the right, palms flexing into the fibers beneath them. On all fours she took several deep breaths feeling her lungs reach capacity with each inhale. The slowing thrum of her heartbeat faded in her ears signaling her nerves were steady. A slight breeze touched any areas of exposed skin, “Rain, ” she thought to herself, “I’ll have to account for that.”

Slowly she opened her eyes, it was getting close. She knelt back on her feet one last time, and looked forwards. The last fingers of light fading in the distance as darkness crept in over the city. She could see everything from here, and most importantly there was no taller building around her. She had needs, as do we all, and she would indulge those needs as much as the next person. The decision to live here had been a tactical one rather than a fiscal one, to the rear was a river dividing her city from a much larger one, most likely anyone who thought the same as her would be far too distracted with their own problems to even look her way, most importantly they were too far away. From her perch she had sight lines down every major street, and hundreds of rooftops. She knew she could be seen, but she would see them first, and she wouldn’t hesitate.

She glanced over her left shoulder, the claymore was secured in its position wired to the only access door. The breeze began to intensify, the time was almost upon her. She took one last sweeping look at the city before her, street lights flickered into life, their hum the only noise in the city mixing with the growing wind. It wouldn’t be quite for long, the storm was coming. She leaned herself forward into a prone position on the bad, fingers finding the grooves of her rifle’s grip. Leaning her head on the buttstock, her right eye’s view of the world magnified intensely through the high powered lens. Her pulse began to quicken, her heartbeat building in her ears matching the low rumble of storm clouds in the distance. She closed her eyes one last time and filled her lungs with air, holding it for a fleeting moment. As she released, the sirens burst into life, The Purge had begun and she would see her needs satisfied.
