Breakthrough
The destruction of the mercenaries sent a shockwave through the remainder of humanity. Each loss was felt keenly as the climax of this conflict came ever closer. Lacking fighters, humanity continued to rely on their technology and machines. There were many haphazard weapons built in those days. Many would fail before even being released to the battlefield, some taking their creators with them.
The lightning gun at Iridina, excellent little device, The heat swords that debuted shortly after “The Night”, those were my personal favorites. There were dozens of others. As city after city fell, humanity’s ability to manufacture anything plummeted. On the evening Hadris Gates fell, twenty five super tanks had escaped the city as it wsa consumed in flame and death. Every salvageable part, every least rusty piece had been scrapped along the way just to keep these three going. When the convoy reached the frozen lakeshore many feared these machines would not see another day. Scouts were sent across as worry grew and time continued to run out. To go around would take too long, they had to chance the lake. Even one of these tanks could turn the tide of battle.
To make matters worse scouts reported a massive unattached tendril of beasts between the convoy and their final destination. It seemed as if the tanks would be tested earlier than expected. The infantry dispatched themselves across the ice. Every soldier standing ready to stem the tide of advancing claws and fangs. As the first tank tread spun into motion, the beasts crested the hill…..
